About the Three Castles of Eguisheim
Please note: the ruins of the three castles are located on the Schlossberg hill and offer a magnificent panoramic view of the village of Eguisheim, which is one of the most beautiful villages in France.
The Dagsburg
The Dagsburg is the northernmost castle on the site. It consists of various defensive elements, including a moat and a keep. The keep was built around 1150 from humped stones. It is 28 meters high and has a surface area of 11 square meters (11x11). Common areas are still visible. Built around the 12th century, it contains a dwelling that houses the ruins of a fireplace.
Note: You can see a wall there, built before the 12th century! It looks like a cistern.
The Wahlenbourg
Wahlenbourg is the castle located at the center of the three castles of Eguisheim. Like Dagsbourg, the castle has a moat. This dates from the early 13th century and separates the castle from Weckmund. The keep is also made of humped and smooth stones, but it is more modest in size, with a height of 23.5 meters and a surface area of 8.50 square meters. At the time, it could be accessed from the main building through a gate. This main building dates back to the 1150s.
We can also see the Saint-Pancrace chapel, which dates back to the 12th century. It is the only building that was spared from the destruction of the site in 1466.
The Weckmund
Weckmund is the third castle on the site and is located to the south. It consists of a keep built at the beginning of the 13th century from humped stones. This one has the same dimensions as the keep of Wahlenbourg and was the victim of a fire that affected its northwest flank.
The legend of the Three Castles of Eguisheim
According to the inhabitants of the village of Eguisheim, these three castles are said to have a strong symbolic role. One is said to be a source of fire, the second a source of water, and the third a gold mine! It is also said that the castles acted as sundials that guided workers in the surrounding plains. Thus, at eleven o'clock, the shadow of Eguisheim Castle covered Dagsbourg Castle, while it covered Wahlenbourge and Weckmund Castles at noon and one o'clock in the afternoon, respectively.
Access
The three castles of Eguisheim are accessible on foot. Please note that from November 15th to March 15th, access is only possible on foot.
Caution! The castle ruins are very fragile, and visitors are solely responsible for their safety. Be very careful!
Please note: the Three Castles site is the starting point of the Five Castles Route which links the castles of Pflixbourg and Hohlansbourg over 20km.
